Description & Mission

Cultural Exchange for Diplomats is comprised of nearly 200 volunteers, who speak 33 languages and have lived in 88 countries, plus one full-time program manager. In a typical year, our volunteers donate 14,000 hours in support of diplomatic families. All the endeavors of CED are designed to fulfill our Mission:

To promote international understanding and friendship through educational, informational and cultural exchanges with members of the diplomatic community in Washington, DC. We believe in the power of Citizen Diplomacy: that a mutual understanding among nations is vital to peace, tolerance, prosperity, and stability in the world.

Since 1961, the power of citizen diplomacy has guided dedicated staff and volunteers to help newly arrived diplomats and their families adapt to life in the United States. Through cultural and educational exchanges that foster camaraderie within the diplomatic community, these generous individuals serve as ambassadors of American hospitality. Their work reminds us of the profound impact each of us can have in building goodwill and mutual understanding among peoples and nations.
— President Barack Obama, 2011
